How to use a place value chart

  1. 1

    Find the decimal point

    Use the decimal point as the anchor. Places to the left are whole numbers; places to the right are parts of one whole.

    Place each digit

    Write one digit in each column. In 4,305,127.608, the digit 4 belongs in the millions place and the digit 6 belongs in the tenths place.

  3. 3

    Read the value

    Multiply the digit by its place. A 4 in the millions place is 4,000,000; an 8 in the thousandths place is 0.008.

Whole numbers and decimals in one place

A place value chart makes the pattern in our number system visible. Each step to the left is ten times larger, while each step to the right of the decimal point is ten times smaller. Use the filled version to introduce a number, the blank version to label digits and values, or the writing sheet to record several numbers independently.
